February 16-17th, 2019 Competition
The 8th 2018/2019 Rhyll Phillip Island Angling Club fishing competition was held over the 16th/17th of February. As hoped, the last competition of summer was outstanding, with a total of 67 fish and 3 sharks weighed in. Enthusiasts were kept busy with multiple reports of an abundance of Mackerel, Juvenile snapper and Gummy sharks. Onlookers were impressed by the appearance of the first Kingfish for the current competition, however, the elusive 1 kg King George whiting continued to evade. Nevertheless, the King George whiting are here and the species was well represented at the weigh in room, with weights ranging from several hundred grams to just under 900 grams. The post competition presentation at the Clubroom was attended and celebrated by members, friends, family, visitors and the Phillip Island community.
The Squidgie Mixed Bag Points competition was won by Phoenix Firth, weighing in 2 fish totalling 40 points, only 85 grams ahead of Denver Firth, who also weighed in 2 fish totalling 40 points. Madison Memery weighed in 2 fish worth 35 points and had an awesome encounter with a Hammerhead shark, sending it back to the water after a quick photo.
The Junior Points competition was won by Harrison Pyle weighing in a princely King George Whiting worth 896 points (320 grams).
The Senior Heaviest Weight Competition was won by Trevor Thompson, with a regal Yellowtail Kingfish weighing 8,000 grams, and Leah Valente, with an excellent specimen of a late summer Snapper weighing 1,185 grams. Debra Orr presented an impressive King George whiting worth 2,100 points (750 grams), also winning the Senior Points Competition. Pat Gleeson wrestled with a Gummy Shark weighing 4,930 grams, to take the win for the Senior Shark Competition.
